Inspired by Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit," Beatrice Manley wrote Conjur Woman in 1979. Manley herself performed the world premiere of Conjur Woman in Los Angeles that year. Conjur Woman was later produced at New York's La Mama, E.T.C. in 1983.
